Entering The Bunker is like entering a small cavern hence the name I guess. The faux sandstone walls and dim lighting are nevertheless welcoming. On a cool Sydney day it’s the warmth of The Bunker that is a real treat providing ample insulation from the southerlies. The chairs are funky triangular metal objects that at first are a touch uncomfortable but once settled in I hardly notice I am sitting on something so small.
A reassuring sign also greets me at The Bunker, that is, the distinctive Campos umbrellas. The Campos brolly is a beacon for the weary coffee addict as in my experience I have yet to be really let down by a cafe that uses Campos beans.
If you are lucky you will see the odd star too sipping a coffee too. As I was waiting for my coffee Hugo Weaving aka Agent Smith from the Matrix trilogy walked in for a bite.
The Bunker’s coffee is supremely good! You are hit with a strong chocolate flavor which then gives way to smooth creamy flavor. One small nit with Campos cups is that they are tiny which I am sure The Bunker till is grateful because I am ordering a second cup. It is that addictive. The hot chocolate is no slouch either. It is rich without being sickly sweet. The bitterness of the cocoa is subtle which for me strikes the right balance.
Food is an eclectic mix. The menu ranges from trout fennel omelette to spanish sardines on toast with tomato sauce and mustard to Reuben-wagyu corned beef sandwich with sauerkraut and pickles. I opt for a pork belly roll. It is a divine with the meat melting in your mouth. One of the best sandwiches I have had in a while. The menu is original for sure and I will definitely be coming back to sample the other choices.
The Bunker is on the corner of Liverpool and Victoria street Darlinghurst, an area that isn’t short of food options. The Bunker serves an innovative fare coupled with stunning coffee. There’s an option for a beer and there were a couple wines by the glass.
The Bunker ticks all the boxes. I would suggest arriving early because by 2pm the soup of the day and a couple of the menu items had sold out.
Service was exceptional. The staff greet you with a warm smile and are very responsive. Our coffee and food arrived pretty quickly as well.
Recommendation : One of the best cafes in the area. One of my favourites is Bills just a few doors down but I think it has been supplanted by The Bunker as my favourite Darlinghurst cafe.
