I am making a pilgrimage to Mecca. Now for those who know me, no I am not converting to Islam and traveling to the Middle East. I am making the short trip across the bridge to Mecca Espresso on King St in Sydney city. Mecca Espresso is conveniently located only a few minutes walk from Wynyard Station and more importantly just around the corner from the Apple store. On a cloudy, stormy afternoon, Mecca is still packed with people, a few hours after the lunch rush.
If the girls at Vella Nero rule midtown Sydney, there is little doubt, that the boys at Mecca Espresso rule the roost at the north end of Sydney city. Mecca Espresso is about stunning consistency. Whether you come here on a Monday or Saturday you will be served a great cup of coffee. I am here with the wife, and our cappuccino and hot chocolate are quick to arrive. My cappuccino is delicious. There is an initial bite of acidity which quickly dissipates into a full bodied flavour cap with slight chocolate notes coming through.
The wife’s hot chocolate is immaculately presented, and she’s quick to point out that just because she didn’t order coffee, the guys still don’t skimp on providing creative latte art on her hot chocolate. She is quick to dispatch the cup of hot chocolate. She exclaims that it is rich without being too sweet and like my coffee is perfectly balanced.
Service at Mecca is very good, the guys are girls are friendly and despite the thousands that file through the cafe every week, and even though I am hardly a regular, they still remember me.
Food options are limited to a few sweet options at the counter. For those of you looking for a more hearty meal with your coffee, don’t despair as the the Mecca crew have opened a cafe in Ultimo with more food options.
Recommendation : If you are a coffee lover, wherever you are in Sydney, you owe it to yourself to make the pilgrimage to Mecca Espresso.
