Newscaf Espresso Bar Newtown Sydney

Newscaf – 267 King Street Newtown(Open 7 days)
With my iPod touch cuing up Bob Marley’s Legend album I take a seat at Newscaf in Newtown. It’s a tall order coming to Newscaf a day after having sampled the wares over at Campos, but my palate is fresh, and I am ready to see how this little cafe, which is housed conveniently next to a newsagent and a door down from the Dendy Cinema complex fares in the Cappuccino stakes. It is 6:00pm on a Sunday evening, and Newscaf is still doing brisk business, and I instantly form a soft spot for this cafe, as most other cafes around, have shut up for the day. Having also been in Newtown not long after sunrise previously, Newscaf is also one of the first cafes on King Street to open.
I order a Cappuccino and a hazelnut friand. It’s a 2 person operation this evening, yet with a 3/4 full cafe, I receive my order within a few minutes of sitting down. Newscaf wins one over Campos, with a significantly larger cup. The guy who makes the coffee delivers the coffee with a smile too. So far so good, friendly service, quick fulfilment of my order. The cappuccino is a quite good. No lingering bitterness after each sip and with milk at the right temperature, it’s a cup I enjoy to the last drop. If I could possibly nitpick I would suggest it lacks a little strength, perhaps a 1/4 shot of Arabica goodness would have elevated this cappuccino into something really great. Perhaps their sign outside proclaiming Sydney’s best coffee is not too far off.
What of my friand, well this friand is showing the ill effects of being on display all day. It’s quite dry and pretty hard to slice through, which is very unlike a friand. Nothing wrong taste wise, with rich hazelnut and chocolate flavours permeating through with each bite. If you are after something more substantial, Newscaf obliges with a lunch/dinner menu. A robust little cafe.
Newscaf is a smoker’s delight with as many tables outside, as there inside. In a suburb where space is a premium, Newscaf’s design makes it very popular for those who a need a smoke. My only gripe, is that the smoke does make its way indoors, perhaps it was the wind direction on this visit.
Overall Newscaf exceeded my expectations from a coffee standpoint. I will definitely return for a meal along with my coffee.

Recommendation : Good coffee at a great price of $2.80. If you work or live in the area, I would make Newscaf a regular pitstop for a takeway coffee.
