Campos Coffee Newtown

Campos Coffee – 193 Missenden Road Newtown, NSW, Australia (Mon- Fri 7:30-4 & Sat 8-4)
It is with some trepidation when one steps into the coffee institution that is Campos Coffee. For one it is never empty, I can attest having been here mid morning on a Tuesday, mid afternoon Thursday and on a crazy Saturday morning, Campos is perpetually packed to the brim, with lines often forming outside for avid coffee aficionados who only seek a takeaway coffee. Campos’ location is prime with the nation’s most famous univeristy and hospital, across the street. With a never ending stream of takeaway coffees, I sit and wonder if quantity will trump quality.

I didn’t have to wait long as my cappuccino arrives in a dainty cup with the earthy tones of the cup matching the contents. Presentation is immaculate, not a drip over the edge and a pretty shaped heart with the coffee art, testament to the fact, that Campos’ barista has spent that extra few seconds pouring his frothy creation. My first sips are pleasant enough, with an initial sharp burst of caffeine but it does not linger, and the just warm milk washes away that bitterness. I get a roasty flavour of the beans coming through, but on this occasion perhaps a bit too powerful. A few sips later I reach an ending with my Campos cappuccino, for today at least .

Now the important question needs to be asked, was it a great cup?

The answer, is sadly on this occasion is NO! But, that is the thing with Campos, I have had a great cup here in the past. On their day Campos, is without peer and do churn real cups of delight.

Fortunately for Campos, their reputation does not hinge squarely on their hot coffees. I have also tried their Iced Coffee with a scoop of Belgian ice cream. In my mind, I would travel the 40km from home just for that. It is legendary! Delicious light and fluffy friands aren’t too be missed. Additionally, you can purchase their beans with a variety of blends.

Recommendation :If you are within 5km of Newtown, come in and brave the crowds for a coffee at Campos. Their average exceeds many a cafe, and when they’re on, they are amongst the best in the city of Sydney!
