Pilu Kiosk

Pilu Kiosk

Having spent 7 years on the Northern Beaches, I was drawn to the site of Pilu many a time. Back at the start of the 21st century, the name of the restaurant was Freshwater, which attracted diners with its modern Australian fare, and made them feel comfortable in a renovated and converted Federation boat house. Fast forward to today and having changed ownership, Pilu stands near the top of Italian fine dining scene in Sydney. When I heard that Pilu had opened a kiosk, appropriately name Pilu Kiosk, I was excited to try it out. If Pilu with its two hats were going to put his name on the kiosk, it was going to be an experience.

Located right at Freshwater Beach, I implore you to find a cafe with a better view. Seated just outside the kiosk I am afforded expansive views north to the Freshwater Beach Rock Pool and the beautiful turquoise waters of Freshwater Beach. I order myself a cappuccino and Pilu’s interpretation of suckling pig in a sandwich. The cappuccino is nothing to write home about. Presentation wise it’s a cute with the cappuccino arriving with a tiny almond biscotti. It’s warm without being burning hot, shavings of milk chocolate is above average but it never really reaches any heights in terms of flavour. Pilu don’t skimp with Single Origin coffee beans. Perhaps it’s the sudden wintery day that have thrown things out of kilter. At $4 for a large cappuccino it’s about average. As well for a sit down lunch, I thought I could have been at least afforded a mug or cup for my coffee instead of a takeway paper cup. Again perhaps it’s my 2:20pm arrival on Sunday, it closes at 3pm.

My suckling pig with sweet apple, fennel and mustard mayonnaise on sonoma bread is a revelation. If my coffee missed the mark, Pilu Kiosk comes through with this delicious sandwich. The pork is succulent and crumbles in your mouth and the accompaniments in the sandwich are a perfect marriage in flavours. It’s a lunch that is scoffed down quite quickly and efficiently. Portion sizes are just right along with the price of $9.50. We pick up a brownie for takeaway, and again it impresses. Pilu’s brownies are moist and with a burst of chocolate flavour and light enough that you keep wanting to go back for another bite. I love that this brownie is not sugary sweet either! Best brownie I have tasted in ages!

Quite simply, Pilu Kiosk is about the best spot to be on a sunny day in Sydney. I didn’t count but there are at least a 1/2 dozen quick lunch options and a similar sized breakfast menu. Be warned though from my quick glance Pilu Kiosk don’t do cooked breakfasts, so if you come ready for an artery busting fry up perhaps head a couple beaches over to Dee Why for that. But if you decide breakfast there are some original creations available. On my next visit I will be sure to look closely at the Egg Pancetta and roasted tomato roll or the toasted fruit bread with ricotta and honey.

Service is friendly and keeping with a beach side location is relaxed and informal. I guess if you’re after more nurturing, head on inside to Pilu.

Recommendation : Definitely worth a trip out Freshwater Beach and to Pilu Kiosk for some great food and amazing views. The coffee was a partial let down but when you are sitting where you sit at Pilu Kiosk and enjoying unique sandwich creations, you quickly sweep aside any disappointments.
