First things first, remember 92, because that’s street number of Cafe Giulia, not much signage gives you a hint that you are approaching. In hindsight, perhaps that’s a good thing, because if this place continues to churn out the quality that I experienced it will be hard to get a seat there. For parking my tip is to turn onto Abercombie Road and stick to the left lane and find parking in either Dangar Place or Myrtle Street, otherwise you may quickly draw the ire of irate drivers as you try to find parking on Abercombie Road. Once you’ve experienced Cafe Giulia though, its location will be etched in your memory for all time. Cafe Giulia has a cool front with a bench for diners to look out on the street, and gives off a very European feel. Inside, the dining area is elongated and deep.
After finding a seat, you make your way to the counter which is dominated by a huge blackboard to peruse the fare on offer. There’s a combination of breakfast and lunch options, a conundrum surfaces as it’s challenge to choose from so many great sounding combinations. Luckily for me, I had done some prior research and had my heart set on the kefte with scrambled eggs, along with a mug of cappuccino, of course!
As we wait for our coffee and meals, M remarks that the aromas wafting out from within the kitchen are devine, I was thinking that was most probably my egg being scrambled with haloumi, mint and tomatoes. My cappuccino in a mug tastes great, the 100% Arabica beans, are roasted perfectly and give out a strong flavour. The initial bite of bitterness quickly gives way to sweeter flavours which quickly neutralises any bitterness, in addition there is a complexity to the flavour which is hard to articulate, but nevertheless, it is pleasant. A really good mug of coffee and the perfect way to start my dining experience at Cafe Giulia. I am impressed with the speed my breakfast arrives, it had to be what those aromas were about, my eggs! Three substantial meatballs with just runny scrambled eggs along with 2 pieces of toast fill my plate. The kefte meatballs are crisp but so succulent and moist inside. A bite into the kefte meatball and you are transported to Northern Africa with the gentle spices dancing a merry dance with mint and onion. In combination with scrambled eggs containing haloumi it is definitely a memorable flavour combination.
Quite simply Cafe Giulia was an amazing breakfast experience. With omelettes and waffles in reserve, there is plenty of future visits to look forward to, not to mention good looking pastas as well. Service is quick, efficient and relaxed. Not to sure you will find many other cafes with the barista running around in tank top and shorts, and still churning out fantastic coffees!
For a place not blessed with stunning ocean vistas, or located amongst chic boutiques, Cafe Giulia delivers outstanding food and excellent coffee. The maximum you would spend for a coffee and meal is $20 though there a ton of options which will see you satisfied with a spend of $12-$15. Again superb value for serving sizes and quality.
My recommendation is, if you are reading this while the sun’s still up, drop everything and head down to Cafe Giulia you will not be disappointed for sure!
